What Makes Skin Care Active?
There are a plethora of serums, oils, creams and lotions flooding the market that claim to do miracles for the skin. But do you know exactly what to look for? Quality clean, active ingredients can be concocted to create a magic potion for your skin. Let’s breakdown the key ingredients to look for when you are seeking a skin care routine, especially if you are desiring anti-aging benefits.
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)
Alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric, and citric acids) are Serums , creams, peels and lotions with alpha-hydroxy acids aid with fine lines, uneven pigmentation and spots from aging and sun damage. They can also help with shrinking pores. One of my favorite clean products is the the Overnight Resurfacing Peel. This peel contains AHAs glycolic, malic, lactic and citric acid to help slough away dead skin cells along with these benefits:
Promotes cellular turnover for a smoother complexion
Boosts overall clarity and radiance. • Reduces the appearance of fine lines.
Minimizes the appearance of pores.
Evens skin tone and reduces the appearance of dark spots.
Ginger Root Extract
When eaten, ginger root can increase circulation, speed up the healing process, slow down aging, and act as an anti-inflammatory. And when used ON THE skin, the benefits are mirrored. There are approximately 40 antioxidants found in ginger, which make this ingredient a potent anti-aging solution. It prevents damage from free radicals and strengthens skin barrier. And because ginger provides circulation, it encourages cell turnover and increases skin elasticity.
Not only is ginger root extract anti-aging, it’s also antibacterial. Like other medicinal plants, ginger root extract speeds up wound healing and reduces the appearance of scars. When it comes to specific inflammatory skin conditions, such as cystic acne, eczema, and psoriasis, not as much is known about the benefits and risks of applying ginger root extract topically to the skin. However, taking a ginger root extract supplement or adding ginger in your diet has the potential to calm inflammation and lead to clearer skin. The Rejuvenating Radiance Serum contains many potent anti-aging benefits, but also includes Ginger Root Extract to provide skin conditioning.
With age and sun exposure, collagen synthesis in the skin decreases, leading to wrinkles. Vitamin C is the only antioxidant proven to stimulate the synthesis of collagen, minimizing fine lines, scars, and wrinkles. It helps brigthten the complexion and even out the tone. A staple in my skincare routine is the No. 1 Brightening Facial Oil that contains Vitamin C and Black Currant Oil that is rich in omegas 3 and 6 to enhance radiance.
Skin care products containing this substance are often used with vitamin C products to assist in effective penetration. Hyaluronic acid (also known as a glycosaminoglycan) is often touted for its ability to "reverse" or stop aging. In news reports, you might have heard of hyaluronic acid as the "key to the fountain of youth." This is because the substance occurs naturally (and quite abundantly) in humans and animals, and is found in young skin, other tissues, and joint fluid. Hyaluronic acid is a component of the body's connective tissues, and is known to cushion and lubricate. As you age, however, the forces of nature destroy hyaluronic acid. Diet and smoking can also affect your body's level of hyaluronic acid over time. The Countermatch Recovery Sleeping Cream provides Hyaluronic Acid, one of the most effective hydrating ingredients, it delivers moisture without clogging pores. It contains two forms of Hyaluronic Acid for ultimate hydration, as well as Plum Oil, a rich in omegas 6 & 9 and vitamin E, it reinforces the moisture barrier for healthy-looking, vibrant skin.
Also known as toothache plant, Jambu and Paracress, Acmella Oleracea is native to Brazil and Peru. It is named for the Brazilian province of Pará and the flower is often used there to spice up various dishes. It is also sometimes used in culinary practice as a flavor enhancer.
Traditionally, it was used as an herbal antiseptic to provide numbing relief of toothaches by simply chewing on the leaves, releasing an analgesic alkylamide called Spilanthol. Spilanthol is also responsible for the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant activity of this versatile plant. Nearly every part of this plant provides beneficial bio-activities with properties of the actual flower being the most potent.
Today, Acmella Oleracea is used as an active ingredient in some anti-aging products to reduce and reverse fine lines and wrinkles. Considered a natural muscle relaxant, it works to relieve subcutaneous muscle contractions of the face, which are greatly attributed to “expression lines” on aging skin. The Rejuvenating Day Cream contains Jambu Extract that helps tighten the skin.
