The Hardest Things To Swap
Making clean swaps has been a gradual game over the last several years. There are personal care products that have been easier to toss, and ones that have taken some time to cut and exchange. Here are a few items that are not just part of my everyday routine, but they are products I truly love.
Viktor&Rolf's Flowerbomb has been my signature scent for years, and I love the way I feel when I wear it. It is feminine yet spicy, powdery but strong. You would think this is an #ad for the perfume, but this is the antithesis of that. I have finally broken free of my love for this perfume. Making the switch was a challenge, but as I dove deeper into my quest for safer personal care, I came to the daunting reality, that this genie in a bottle, was simply bad for me. While we see the word fragrance at the top of most perfume's ingredient list, this can be a dirty word. Fragrance is a blanket statement, and the FDA doesn't regulate it. It can cause hormone disruption, allergies, and irritation. It contains diethyl phthalate, which can cause reproductive harm.
So what did I do to make the switch? I found Phlur, and it is just as, if not more heavenly than my beloved Flowerbomb. Phlur is a brand that is committed to providing quality and safe perfumes and candles. Here is what they say:
"Your health is of the utmost importance to us. So we deliberately exclude all potentially harmful ingredients. That means minimizing skin irritants and no unnecessary additives—better for your skin, better for you. And because, like you, we care about our planet, we coordinate with the IUCN (more on them below) to ensure all our ingredients are responsibly sourced. Deodorant was a hard one for me to make the switch. I knew deep down that I needed to rid my personal care of parabens and aluminum, but I also didn't want to compromise my hygiene! Then I discovered Native! It truly has been a game changer, free of parabens and aluminum, and full of the protection and freshness I was seeking. I use the sensitive Cotton and Lily scent because I am prone to rashes from baking soda. You can redeem a free-mini here when you place an order. The minis are perfect for my diaper bag, purse, and travel.
I just recently made the switch to GOOD FOR YOU hair care. Everything from my shampoo and conditioner to my hair gel and hairspray. I am in love with Innersense Beauty hair products. Why do you need safer hair care? Here are three reasons:
- Your scalp soaks up those ingredients, just like your skin.
- Many hair care products on the market contain SLS, SLES, and ALS. These are sulfates that can strip your hair of its natural oil, as well as cause irritation.
- Conditioners typically create shine and smoothness. Many non-safe conditioners have silicones to thank for that shine. Once the molecules are placed on the hair, they tend to stick around for at least 10 washes. You can avoid silicones by going natural and avoiding products that contain the word "cone”—like dimethicone or cyclomethicone, but also avoid other ingredients such as dimethiconol and cyclopentasiloxane, which can be harmful, too.
The luxurious subtle scent of the shampoo and conditioner is heavenly and leaves the hair light, yet hydrated. I then use a touch of the leave-in conditioner to add extra moisture. This product will be especially crucial during the dry, winter months. The I Create Volume is the bomb-dot-com. Honestly, this gives my hair bounce and the most heavenly amount of volume. The Finishing Polish adds extra hold to my style, and my husband likes it too! I then spritz on the I Create Finishing Spray which gives a nice hold, that is never crunchy to the touch. My other favorite shampoo and conditioner the Volume and Shape Shampoo and Conditioner Collection from Beautycounter. This collection is free of sulfates and harsh chemicals but leaves your hair volumized and ready for all the ooh-la-las. You can purchase these products individually, too, but I do love the Volume and Shape Mist that leaves your hair light and airy, and full of that va-va-voom.
Man-readers, you can skip this one! I never knew that that tampons carried such harmful ingredients! As a gal with endometriosis, I should be avoiding any bleached tampons or pads due to the level of dioxins. I love that these are free of all pesticide and chlorine. You can buy combo boxes, which I love. They also have pads, too. And for every purchase, they supply a woman in a developing country with a box, too! You can buy them here.
This one has been HARD. I am currently using Tom's Flouride-Free, but I know that I can do better. What is your favorite swap? Leave what you use in the comments!
